Chapter 92: We’re… the Only Two Left!
“What is it, Young Master Chu?”
Tan Yingyao noticed that something was off about Chu Fei and called out to him.
Chu Fei ignored him.
He went straight to the white-haired girl.
Among the children, she was one of the older ones, though she still looked underage.
Her delicate, youthful face had grown pale and somewhat forlorn from too long without sunlight or smiles.
Yet those deep eyes were unusually bright. Only when they met Chu Fei’s gaze did they flicker with evasion, as though she were terrified of contact with the outside world.
“What a beautiful child,” Tan Yingyao could not help but praise.
No wonder Chu Fei had lost all thought of moving on the moment he saw her.
A pure girl like a blank sheet of paper was exactly the sort of thing that made people want to stain her.
But the way Chu Fei looked at her now was not lewd in the slightest.
There was only confusion.
He took out his phone, found a photograph, and compared it to the girl before him. Aside from the white hair, they looked almost exactly the same.
That photo had been sent to him by Meng Ziyi.
The girl in it was one of his missing fiances from Dragon City, Wen Nuan, whom he had never even met.
But the problem was this: the photo had been taken when she was thirteen or fourteen, and ten years had passed since then. Why had she not changed at all?
Was she underdeveloped?
That could not be right. Even if she had been, after ten years of time, how could a person remain exactly the same?
Seeing this strange man staring at her with such odd eyes, the girl retreated a little, like a little white rabbit cornered with nowhere to run, pitiful and frightened.
The instant their eyes met, Chu Fei suddenly asked, “Are you Wen Nuan?”
Wen Nuan nodded.
Apparently she had not expected this strange man to know her name.
Chu Fei frowned and reached out to touch her throat.
His spiritual energy entered her body, not only nourishing Wen Nuan’s injured frame, but also healing her damaged vocal cords.
Wen Nuan thought Chu Fei was about to hurt her and instinctively tried to dodge.
But soon she felt the warmth of his palm, and that tingling sensation spreading through her body was wonderfully soothing.
“My body, it does not hurt anymore...”
Wen Nuan spoke.
Then, in panic, she covered her mouth with both hands.
She looked at Chu Fei in disbelief.
“I... can speak?”
“Yes. So tell me, how did you end up here?”
Chu Fei had many questions for the girl before him.
Unfortunately, she knew nothing.
She only knew her own name.
Seeing Chu Fei’s disappointment, a dimness seemed to cloud Wen Nuan’s lovely eyes.
It was as though she were angry at herself for not being able to answer.
“I’m sorry...”
Wen Nuan lowered her head.
“I don’t know what I did wrong.”
“Please don’t be angry, okay?”
Watching her dejected little figure, Chu Fei opened his mouth, and for once, a man as sharp-tongued as he was did not know what to say.
Only one thought filled his heart:
I really am a damned bastard.
“Hey, Young Master Chu, why are you bullying this little girl?”
Seeing such a sweet, adorable child being wronged, Tan Yingyao immediately shot Chu Fei an unhappy glare.
“Could you stop trying to make yourself noticed? Have you forgotten about chopping off your little brother?” Chu Fei replied irritably.
Only then did Tan Yingyao remember.
He had sworn on that very thing that the Du family were all good people.
And now...
“Young Master Chu, I’ll cut it off right now!”
Tan Yingyao was a man who kept his word. Having said that, he was about to swing the knife and castrate himself on the spot.
Fortunately, at the critical moment, Chu Fei waved a hand.
“What would I want that thing for? To go fishing?”
Though his little brother was spared, Tan Yingyao still felt as though he had been insulted.
Still, he no longer dared try to draw attention to himself. Instead, he gathered the children together and led them out of the basement.
Chu Fei also got up to leave.
But Wen Nuan suddenly reached out and grabbed the hem of his clothes.
Under the dim lights, her expression looked just like that of an abandoned little animal under a streetlamp.
“D-don’t go.”
Her voice was so faint it was barely a whisper.
Yet it made something in Chu Fei’s heart ache.
He seemed to see a shadow of his former self.
“You don’t want to be alone?” Chu Fei sighed, making a great effort to soften his tone.
“Then from now on, there will be two of us.”
Wen Nuan’s eyes lit up.
Like a kitten seeing a glowing thing for the first time.
And in her eyes, Chu Fei became dazzlingly golden, as brilliant as the sun.
She did not reach for his hand.
Instead, she threw herself straight into his chest and clung to him without letting go.
“Two... two people!”
Chu Fei was a little dazed by the girl’s sudden attack.
When he heard her tearful murmur, he smiled gently.
“You should like someone who can make you laugh, not someone like me, who keeps making you cry because I’m too handsome.”
“Handsome?”
Wen Nuan looked up at him.
Her little head seemed not to understand the word at all.
She was thinking about it. She was actually thinking!
Then she blurted out, “Good person.”
Chu Fei instantly lost his temper, then let out a self-mocking laugh.
“I’m no good person. It’s just that you’re so good, I can’t bring myself to be too bad.”
...
With the Du family destroyed, these children needed proper arrangements.
Tan Yingyao volunteered, saying this matter could be left to him and that he would absolutely ensure the children’s safety and livelihood from now on.
Of course Chu Fei knew exactly what was on Tan Yingyao’s mind.
With the Du family wiped out, he could swallow them whole, just as he had swallowed the Huang Group.
Chu Fei did not mind. He could tell that Tan Yingyao was not exactly a saint, but he was still not as rotten as the people of the Du family.
If he had been, he would never have nearly fallen out with Chu Fei just because he thought Chu Fei was slaughtering innocents.
As long as he took good care of the children, giving him a little benefit was no problem.
Besides, even if Tan Yingyao did not absorb the Du family, without its backbone, it would sooner or later be carved up by other families anyway.
Chu Fei had no interest in business affairs. Better to give it to Tan Yingyao, who was practically one of his own. And besides, was not Tan Yingyao’s money essentially his money too?
“Old Tan, take this.”
Chu Fei took out a pill and handed it to him.
Tan Yingyao looked puzzled.
“Young Master Chu, what is this?”
“A Spirit Essence Pill. It can boost your spiritual power for a short time and raise you to the level of a Ninth-Rank Martial Master.”
Chu Fei said it casually, but Tan Yingyao’s eyes widened.
As a martial artist, he naturally knew how precious a Spirit Essence Pill was. It was the kind of rare treasure that money could not easily buy.
He had not expected Chu Fei to hand him one so casually, without even blinking.
“From this day on, Young Master Chu, my life is yours. Wherever Young Master Chu points, I will never go the other way. I will fight for Young Master Chu with my very life!”
“Enough with the flattery. You’re about to flatter yourself to death.”
Chu Fei told the old man not to be so over-the-top, then left the rest here to him.
As for himself, he brought Wen Nuan and the Dew-Descending Herb he had found back to the villa.
The moment the three women inside saw Chu Fei return with a girl, all of them instantly bristled.
