Chapter 68: To Hear the Way in the Morning, One Could Die Content in the Evening
He wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but Chu Fei felt that the half-closed eye on the black box seemed to have shut a little more, now almost three-fifths of the way. What was going on? Aside from his date with Jiang Yunqi yesterday, he had only seen Song Yalan. Could the extent to which the eye closed be related to how often he did that sort of thing? But that didn’t make sense. If it was really calculated by frequency, it should have been completely shut by now!
“Can’t figure it out. I’ll just see how it looks after I visit Song Yalan again tomorrow night.” Fortunately, Chu Fei wasn’t the type to overthink things. If something didn’t make sense, he just let it go—and soon forgot about it entirely.
He turned over and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep until morning.
As soon as he stepped into the living room, Chu Fei noticed Shen Miaoyu, nursing a cup of coffee with dark rings beneath her eyes. He grinned, “That smoky eye makeup is quite a look for you!”
“These are dark circles!” Shen Miaoyu shot him a glare.
“Staying up late will ruin your looks,” Chu Fei consoled, then added, “But if you’re ugly to begin with, you have nothing to lose.”
Shen Miaoyu snorted in annoyance. Who could she blame but herself? She’d spent the whole night agonizing over whether Chu Fei had seen her working on her crafts last night, and the embarrassment had kept her up until dawn. But such a mortifying question couldn’t be asked outright, so she had to probe indirectly.
“What time did you get home last night?” she asked.
Busy in the kitchen, Chu Fei immediately guessed what she was getting at. Mischief sparkled in his eyes as he feigned ignorance. “I got home just as I ran into Fourth Senior Sister. Why do you ask all of a sudden?”
“So… you didn’t see anything you shouldn’t have seen?” Shen Miaoyu sounded a bit nervous.
“See what?” Chu Fei turned, his smile sly and teasing. “You haven’t been up to anything shady behind my back, have you?”
That lewd grin—had he seen or not? Shen Miaoyu couldn’t tell, so she decided to assume he hadn’t.
“By the way, you’re coming with me to my hometown tomorrow. It’s my grandmother’s seventy-fifth birthday. Can you prepare a gift, or should I do it for you?”
Shen Miaoyu was a filial child, well-liked by the elders. Even though she’d been cast out of the Shen family, she still felt she should attend her grandmother’s birthday.
“Will Shen Linglong be there too?” Chu Fei’s eyes lit up.
Shen Miaoyu frowned. Why was this brat suddenly interested in Shen Linglong? Could he be thinking of having both sisters?
“What does it matter if she’s there? Don’t tell me you want to—”
“I want to draw her again.”
Shen Miaoyu was speechless. It had almost been two days since Chu Fei had drawn Shen Linglong, and he was feeling out of sorts. It was like an addiction—he couldn’t go a day without it!
“She’ll definitely be there. She wouldn’t miss a chance to cause a scene,” Shen Miaoyu replied.
“That’s perfect. I’ll prepare my own gift,” Chu Fei said cheerfully. “Consider it a thank you. Come have some noodles!”
Shen Miaoyu hadn’t expected him to agree so readily, and her annoyance from the previous night faded. But as she sat at the table, she couldn’t help but complain, “Noodles again?”
“I’m helping you train. The more you slurp noodles, the more useful it’ll be someday.”
She hadn’t quite grasped what he meant when Secretary Jin, just coming down the stairs, called out, “Chairman, are you as skinny as a noodle?”
Chu Fei shot Secretary Jin a glare, thinking he’d finally met his match.
Shen Miaoyu caught on right away and said, “Oh, it’s fine. Small can be cute too!”
“You’ll have to ask CEO Shen about that,” Chu Fei retorted slyly.
Shen Miaoyu rewarded him with a dramatic eye roll.
After breakfast, Shen Miaoyu suddenly said, “By the way, your Fourth Senior Sister might be in some trouble.”
“What kind of trouble?” Chu Fei asked.
Secretary Jin chimed in, “Don’t you follow the gossip? Since yesterday, Miss Zhou has been trending nonstop!”
She opened Weibo and showed Chu Fei two glaring headlines:
#Lu Yunkun Accuses Zhou Mi#
#Zhou Mi’s Affair#
After the romantic rendezvous the night before, the mysterious silhouette had sparked wild speculation online. Now, at this critical moment, Lu Yunkun had posted a dramatic essay titled, “In the End, I Gave My Heart to the Wrong Person—To Think the One I Loved Most Hurt Me the Deepest!”
In three thousand passionate words, Lu Yunkun recounted how he and Zhou Mi had met, fallen in love, and how he’d been cruelly betrayed. He painted himself as the victim abandoned by a heartless woman, while Zhou Mi was cast as a fickle, unfaithful villain.
The article set the entire entertainment world ablaze. Comments under Lu Yunkun’s post were a circus of sympathy and outrage:
“I knew Zhou Mi was no good. Glad you saw her true colors sooner rather than later!”
“My poor Kun Kun—Mama’s here for you! That woman deserves to be hit by a car!”
“Sisters, who was that silhouette? Could he possibly be more handsome than our Kun Kun? That wretched Zhou Mi must be blind!”
“Not just blind, but shameless! She used Kun Kun for clout and then kicked him aside—unbelievable!”
“She’s just a tramp, and that shadowy guy looks short, ugly, and fat—disgusting!”
“Stars with such depraved morals should be blacklisted! And that shadowy scumbag—let’s dox him and make him apologize to our Kun Kun!”
After reading the comments, Chu Fei cursed, “What a mouthful of pre-rain Dragon Well tea!”
Just then, Zhou Mi came downstairs, clearly in a bad mood. Her agent, Sister Wang, had already called about the online storm—she was at her wits’ end with Lu Yunkun’s antics.
“Did you see what people are saying online?” Chu Fei looked up at Zhou Mi, his tone calm.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Not the first time someone’s tried to drag me through the mud,” Zhou Mi forced a smile. “Let them rant. I don’t care.”
“But I care,” Chu Fei said seriously. “Do you know where this Lu Yunkun is?”
“To learn the Way in the morning, and die in the evening,” he said—a phrase that, in this context, meant: the moment I know where you are, I’ll come over and beat you to death. In short—he was going to deal with Kun Kun personally.
“I know!” Secretary Jin immediately raised her hand. “He’s holding a press conference in Yang City soon to talk about this.”
“Chairman, I’ll send you the address right now!”
Shen Miaoyu frowned. “I just checked—Yang City is almost two thousand kilometers from Long City, and there are no direct flights…”
“No problem.” Chu Fei made a call, took a deep breath, and coughed theatrically. Then, in an exaggerated, playful voice, he pleaded, “My dearest, most beloved Senior Sister, your most handsome little junior needs a favor…”
Meanwhile, at the Yang City press conference, a pretty-faced young idol, whose features were almost more delicate than a woman’s, sat cross-legged, flashing his agent a sly smile.
“Sister Lu, the ghostwriter did a good job with that essay. But aren’t you afraid we’ll offend the capital backing that bitch?”
“Capital? We are the capital!” Sister Lu sneered. “I’ve had it in for Zhou Mi for a long time. She should be grateful to share a CP with you, but that ungrateful tramp didn’t know what’s good for her!”
“Then she can’t blame us for stepping on her to climb higher. This time, I’ll ruin her so badly she’s forced out of the industry, and you—if you seize this chance—will become the king of all top idols!”
