Chapter Ninety-Seven: Killing Intent
As Bai Jingjing brushed past her, she said coolly, “I am Bai Jingjing, not a clown. When you are protecting me, don’t go live-streaming. I am not a clown for you to rake in traffic with.”
Her words carried a note of anger.
The video posted on Xu Bing’s social platform had been clipped and spread across the internet. She had seen it the moment she got off the plane, and she was deeply displeased.
Lin Qiu watched the way Xu Bing’s hands tightened into fists, and a trace of amusement appeared in his eyes.
“Why don’t you just take her apart? That doesn’t sound like your style,” he said gleefully.
He was speaking through the contract between the two of them, communicating mentally.
Xu Bing let out a cold snort. “I’m on a mission right now. I’ll show her my temper once the mission is over.”
While continuing her mental exchange with Lin Qiu, Xu Bing answered Bai Jingjing calmly, “I know exactly what I’m doing. Miss Bai can rest assured.”
“I hope you keep your word.”
Bai Jingjing snorted and stepped away again, but she turned her head slightly to glance at Lin Qiu, her eyes flickering with uncertainty.
“This guy doesn’t seem simple. He doesn’t look as weak as he appears.”
“I actually felt a suppression from his bloodline.”
“Could it be that he isn’t human either, but one of the demon clans?”
With these thoughts in mind, Bai Jingjing hurried off.
The muscles at the corner of Lin Qiu’s mouth twitched slightly as well.
In his eyes was a data panel, which displayed Bai Jingjing’s identity and species.
What surprised him most was that this woman was actually a sixth-tier expert.
A sixth-tier expert had hired a meek third-tier coward as a bodyguard. Was this some kind of joke?
Lin Qiu looked at her deeply, then followed after her.
Xu Bing took the driver’s seat, Lin Qiu sat in the front passenger seat, and Bai Jingjing sat in the back, lowering her head to read a magazine.
The instant the car stopped at a red light, her eyes narrowed.
Her gaze passed through the glass window toward the three o’clock direction on the right.
There, she saw a burly man wearing sunglasses standing by the signpost. His eyes seemed to cut through the traffic flowing back and forth and lock onto the car she was in.
Though he wore sunglasses, Bai Jingjing could still feel a sharp gaze piercing through the lenses and landing on her body, like a blade scraping across her skin and causing a faint ache.
Her expression grew solemn, and the hand holding the magazine slowly tightened.
“Killing intent?!”
Lin Qiu was startled and sent a warning through the mental bridge to Xu Bing.
Xu Bing, who was driving, yanked the handbrake with her right hand. Her right foot struck both brake and accelerator while her left also depressed the clutch.
The moment her hands violently whipped the steering wheel to the left, a black off-road vehicle spun through the air and came crashing toward them. Xu Bing’s car, with its four-wheel drive gripping the ground, had its tires spinning furiously in place, grinding out curls of scorched black smoke.
At the very moment the airborne vehicle was about to smash into them, Xu Bing, with the wheel already turned hard over, abruptly released the handbrake.
At the same time, her left foot slammed down on the clutch, she let off the brake, and her other foot stomped the accelerator.
The engine revved to five thousand RPM, and then she let the clutch go.
At the critical point of the clutch engagement, the car began to drift in place, and then the clutch was fully released.
Xu Bing remained steady and composed, controlling the car swiftly as it moved toward a safe spot.
Boom!
The tumbling off-road vehicle crashed down exactly where her car had just been, producing a deafening roar.
Its nose pointed downward, the entire front end and headlights shattering instantly and flying in all directions.
At the same time, the A-pillar of the driver’s cabin snapped at once, and the airbags deployed.
Boom!
Another explosive blast rang out. The fuel tank ruptured in the impact, and amid the sparks flying from the grinding collision between the car and the ground, the vehicle ignited.
“Aah!”
Drivers waiting at the light and pedestrians on the sidewalk screamed in terror at the sight.
The explosion from the off-road vehicle also took innocent bystanders with it.
The blast wave sent the surrounding cars flying backward.
The scene descended into chaos. Unlucky drivers and pedestrians let out pained cries.
Alarms from the patrol guards sounded, and they rushed toward the scene.
Xu Bing’s car, meanwhile, completed its drift and came to a stop by the curb of the two-way road.
The doors opened, and the three of them got out quickly. Ignoring the chaos around them, their gazes locked onto the man in sunglasses by the signpost not far away.
Lin Qiu’s face turned grave.
This man gave him a dangerous feeling. As the system panel in his eyes rotated rapidly, the man’s information appeared before him.
“Tian Jiu, from the Primordial Wolf Clan, level six.”
Seeing the data, Lin Qiu drew in a sharp breath.
Why were all the opponents such heavyweights?
From the information provided by Xu Bancheng, the wolf clan was also one of the great clans among the demon tribes of the primordial era.
And the wolf clan was also one of the sworn natural enemies of the White Swan race.
It was like cats and mice: born enemies, written into the blood. The moment they met, it would be life or death, no reason needed.
Because of the difference in bloodline, their conflict was one of irreconcilable enmity. They could never become friends in this lifetime.
While Lin Qiu felt the weight in his heart, Tian Jiu raised his thumb, then pointed it downward.
That insulting gesture changed all three of their expressions.
“Bai Jingjing, I came from the Primordial Lands all the way to the city after you. Every time I try to hunt you down, someone ruins my plans.”
Tian Jiu’s voice echoed in Bai Jingjing’s mind, making her face turn somewhat pale.
Both were sixth-tier powerhouses.
But the wolf clan’s innate bloodline suppressed the White Swan clan to a certain extent.
In battles of the same tier, it was almost always the White Swans who died. There were nearly no exceptions.
That was why members of the White Swan clan, when encountering the wolf clan or the fox clan, would usually back away without a second thought.
Just as a flicker of panic appeared in Bai Jingjing’s eyes behind her sunglasses, Tian Jiu’s voice came again.
“Tomorrow is the concert. I’ll kill you in front of everyone.”
“If a goddess of pure beauty is killed in full view of the crowd, the looks on their faces will be absolutely priceless, don’t you think?”
Tian Jiu let out a strange, hooting laugh, shoved both hands into his pockets, and turned to disappear into the crowd.
“Let’s go.”
Bai Jingjing’s voice was gloomy as she opened the car door and got in.
Xu Bing and Lin Qiu exchanged a look, and both saw helplessness in each other’s eyes.
“This mission...” Xu Bing gave a bitter laugh. “It’s not the last one, is it?”
“Bullshit!”
Lin Qiu shot her an irritated glare. “If you weren’t such a burden, killing him would be nothing more than a flick of the hand for me.”
