Chapter Ninety-Four: Sidelined by the System Again
First, before he was born, he was human, and the golden fluid and primal force had gone straight past humanity.
Second, before he was born, he was human; after death, he was merely a corpse. He would not awaken intelligence through mutation and turn into a zombie.
Yet within the great formation laid by the Heavenly Secrets of the Undying Heretical Sect, he had actually received the yin and yang earth energies, combined with the bloodline of the Nine Sons, and transformed into a zombie.
Such a method was simply unheard of.
A faint chill suddenly rose in Lin Qiu’s heart.
If humanity had appeared in the first five civilizations, or in that even more distant age of savagery, could it still have become the plaything of heaven and earth, able to sway the balance of the cosmos?
Lost in wild thoughts, he began to study the dossier carefully.
It stated that the person they were to protect this time was Princess Bai Jingjing of the White Swan clan.
“Her?!”
Lin Qiu stared in shock, unable to help drawing in a sharp breath.
Bai Jingjing! It was actually Bai Jingjing!
She was one of the most celebrated stars in present-day China, a diva-level celebrity who had debuted for years without a single scandal. Her singing voice was so haunting it could linger for days.
Lin Qiu had never imagined that Bai Jingjing was actually a member of the White Swan clan.
“I really did not expect it. The diva Bai Jingjing is actually a strange beast.”
Xu Bing also clicked her tongue in astonishment, finding it unbelievable.
Lin Qiu nodded repeatedly.
Xu Bancheng’s dossier was extremely detailed; it had come from above. It recorded in depth the primordial wilderness and those families and sects. Only now did Lin Qiu finally feel as though he were looking at the world from the bottom of a well.
He had thought that by obtaining the system and becoming the first strange beast, he stood alone at the summit. He had not expected the world itself to change afterward.
Strange beasts of sea, land, and air all emerged, while humanity was overlooked.
He had once thought it was because humans were inadequate, but now he realized it was not that humans were inadequate, but that they were too formidable.
And now the vaccine had appeared, allowing humans to walk the same path of evolution as strange beasts.
Perhaps in the future, humanity would still be able to become the ruler of this world.
To make the endless strange beasts submit.
Lin Qiu was quite proud of that, after all, his soul was still human.
Only, he was somewhat curious: what exactly was the difference between the primordial demons, the people of these sects, and the evolved strange beasts?
Holding to the good habit of asking the system whenever he did not understand something, Lin Qiu posed the question.
The system answered: “The greatest difference between them is that strange beasts are simply strange beasts. Their attack methods are too monotonous, relying on the power of blood and qi.”
“As for the primordial demons, they cultivate the power of heaven and earth; the force within them is demon power, and their techniques are endlessly varied.”
“In other words, they are the true descendants of the age of savagery, absolutely not the product of two rats from the Kamas galaxy who were mutated after being injected with golden fluid and ignited by primal force.”
Lin Qiu smacked his lips in astonishment. He had not expected the bloodlines of these primordial demons to be so noble, the inheritors of the age of savagery.
No wonder they could begin cultivating even before mutation and later enter the human world, leaving behind countless legends.
“There is one even greater difference: they cannot be contracted.”
“And Black Ze?”
Lin Qiu frowned.
That giant black dog was the descendant of the celestial hound of the age of savagery, and yet he could be contracted. Why, then, could these demons not?
“Black Ze has the bloodline of a celestial hound, but he mutated under primal force and golden fluid.”
“If he had lived in the primordial wilderness, he would have been isolated by that world and would have cultivated on his own, and then he would not have been contractible.”
“Again with primal force, and again with golden fluid!”
Lin Qiu felt a little irritated, and then his eyes widened.
“Hey, system, that’s not right! I never underwent the baptism of golden fluid either, so how could I have signed a contract with Xu Bing?!”
“Because I made you sign it.”
“I...”
The system’s explanation left Lin Qiu on the verge of tears. As expected, this system had been screwing him over again.
“Speak. How many truths do you actually have in that mouth of yours? I really can’t dissolve the contract?”
Lin Qiu ground his teeth.
This system was always setting him up.
Since the contract had been made under the system’s direction, there must be a way to undo it.
Because he did not want to be with Xu Bing. That woman was no good, and her constitution was far too weak. If she had not repeatedly stolen his power behind his back, he would already be a fifth-rank expert.
He had only just begun, and already he had been wronged like this. If he had to follow her for the rest of his life?
Lin Qiu shivered, not daring to think further.
“No!”
After a brief silence, the system spat out those two words.
Lin Qiu asked unwillingly, “Why?”
“Because I am the system, and all rights of interpretation belong to this system!”
With that, the system fell silent again. No matter how Lin Qiu called out, it never appeared again.
“Bastard!”
Lin Qiu swallowed the blood in his mouth along with the broken tooth. Only today did he learn that it had all been the system’s doing.
As long as one was not affected by the power of golden fluid and primal force, one could not sign a contract with humans, just like the primordial demons.
But the system had tampered with him and changed all that.
He did not know why the system had done this.
Although he longed for the human world, he preferred roaming freely in the sea. But now? He could only trail behind a timid fool.
The more he thought about it, the more vexed he became, and the more he felt Xu Bing was hateful.
Such worthless constitution, and yet he had run into her and signed a contract.
Though annoyed, he still continued reading the dossier.
The dossier stated that Bai Jingjing was being hunted, and they were to assign one person to protect her at all times. Among the few of them, only Lin Qiu had the highest combat strength, and his partner was a woman besides. Thus this mission could only fall on Lin Qiu and Xu Bing’s shoulders.
After all, this was close protection. The little cutie’s identity did not fit, and most importantly, her combat strength was not up to the task.
Now there was a Thunder Dragon as well, but he was a zombie, and still a male one at that. How could he possibly serve as close protection?
Sure enough, the little cutie’s voice came through: “The club president said to have Sister Bingbing provide close protection. Once the Wudu concert ends this time, the mission will be considered complete.”
“And do they know who wants to assassinate Bai Jingjing?”
Seeing that it was impossible, Lin Qiu asked out of curiosity.
“That’s unclear. This was an invitation issued by Bai Jingjing herself, and as for who it is, she did not say.”
“However, the treatment is very good. If the mission is completed smoothly, one million can be obtained.”
“One million?!”
Lin Qiu’s eyes lit up.
And the system’s voice rang out: “Mission triggered: The Half-Demon’s Protection.”
“The Half-Demon’s Protection?”
Lin Qiu was somewhat bewildered. What was this now?
He asked the system, but the system ignored him and once again sank into silence.
“You may not explain what the Half-Demon’s Protection is, but you should at least tell me what the reward is, right?”
Annoyed though he was, rewards were still worth asking for.
“If the host completes the mission, they will receive one lucky draw.”
At the system’s prompt, a system interface appeared before Lin Qiu’s eyes, with a circular wheel upon it.
