Chapter 1: Descending the Mountain
In early March, the chill of spring still lingered. The season brought heavy rains, and wisps of mist rose between the mountains of Cloud Mist Range, shrouding the entire landscape in a gauzy veil, as if it were a celestial realm fit for immortals.
A young girl stood by the winding mountain road, holding a paper umbrella. She wore a simple spring blouse adorned with ink bamboo patterns, and a cloth bag hung from the crook of her right arm. Lost in thought, she watched the torrential rain pour down.
Her features were exquisite, her skin pale and smooth as jade, lips crimson without the touch of rouge, and her aura was ethereal, almost otherworldly.
A hint of amusement danced in Bai Chuwei’s bright eyes. With slender, jade-like fingers gently caressing her chin, she murmured to herself, “It seems the Bai family never intended to come for me. Is the plot about to begin already?”
Bai Chuwei had transmigrated into the role of a doomed supporting character in a Mary Sue novel, and had been bound to a system devoted to punishing the wicked. But the wretched system had malfunctioned irreversibly, sending her into this world five thousand years ahead of the original timeline!
After living for five millennia and becoming something of a living legend, Bai Chuwei finally found herself at the very start of the story.
At that moment, a sleek black luxury car cut through the mist, approaching her.
Bai Chuwei immediately stepped into the middle of the road and waved at the car.
The vehicle slowed to a stop. The driver rolled down the window halfway, his expression awed as he looked at Bai Chuwei and inquired politely, “Young lady, do you need something?”
Her eyes curved with a smile, revealing rows of white teeth. “Since you’re heading down the mountain, could you give me a ride as well?”
Clearly, the driver wasn’t the one in charge. He looked back helplessly, and from the rear compartment came a rich, deep male voice: “No. Drive on.”
Through the rain-slicked window, Bai Chuwei glimpsed a strikingly handsome man in the back, eyes closed in repose. His brows were cold and sharp, his nose straight and noble; his features were flawless.
Even after five thousand years, Bai Chuwei couldn’t help but be taken aback by the man’s beauty.
She always found herself more patient with good-looking people. Lifting her lips in a soft smile, she said, “Are you lost in the mountains? I know the way down.”
The young man in the front passenger seat brightened instantly, making a quick decision: “Fantastic! We won’t have to keep circling these mountains. Get in!”
Bai Chuwei opened the rear door, and the car’s warmth enveloped her. She folded her paper umbrella and took her seat.
Only then did she see the man in the back clearly—his features noble and cold, profile perfect, dressed in a formal black suit, a string of sandalwood prayer beads wrapped around his left wrist.
He simply sat there in silence, yet his presence was impossible to ignore; the aura of authority radiated from him.
Duan Feihan’s slender fingers idly rolled the prayer beads as he opened his eyes, coolly surveying the stunning Bai Chuwei. His gaze grew even deeper and more inscrutable.
Outside, the rain still poured down in torrents, yet not a single drop had touched the girl’s hair. Even the soles of her cloth shoes were spotless and dry, the uppers pristine white—untouched by dirt or water.
There was an odd air of spiritual energy about her.
Bai Chuwei’s delicate brows furrowed. She felt she had seen this man somewhere before, but couldn’t quite recall. She lifted a slender finger and pointed ahead. “Turn left at the next intersection.”
The boy in the front seat asked suspiciously, “Do you really know the way? We already tried turning left and just kept going in circles.”
Bai Chuwei’s lips curved in a confident smile. “Turn left.”
A little over ten minutes later, the understated black Rolls-Royce finally emerged from Cloud Mist Range, as if parting the clouds to see the sun.
The driver slapped the steering wheel in excitement. “Incredible! Young lady, is your mouth blessed? We actually made it out!”
