Chapter 140: Wang Chen Arrives on the Scene
The organizer seated in the center wore a contented smile.
It was wonderful that Beisheng and Qinghua were competing for Luzhou’s students. If only a few more students were in such demand, it would be even better.
However, this posed a challenge for Luzhou. The remaining students eligible for the two top universities were simply the best among a large pool, barely meeting the admission quotas set for each regional prefecture.
It was impossible for any to be fiercely contested like Lu Shiyu.
“Sigh, contentment is happiness,” the organizer comforted himself silently.
...
Back at the testing venue.
After completing her test, Lu Shiyu listened to the surrounding clamor with an expression unchanging, still maintaining that cool, aloof demeanor.
The testing instructor smiled and said to her, “Student, your level is too high, it’s a bit risky.”
“The crystal ball we’re using this time can only withstand a level cap of twenty-seven.”
“In past years, no one ever reached such a high level, so to save costs, we used this type of crystal ball.”
Lu Shiyu smiled faintly. “Luckily, I didn’t reach level twenty-seven.”
The instructor waved his hand. “It’s simply impossible for anyone to level up so fast. Awakening only happened recently, so it’s out of the question.”
After a brief exchange, Lu Shiyu stepped aside to meet with Tang Ruotong.
“So, the students of Class Six at Luzhou No.1 High School should have finished testing by now, right?”
The homeroom teacher of Class Six hesitated for a moment but ultimately said nothing.
Tang Ruotong and Lu Shiyu exchanged a determined glance and stepped forward, intending to interrupt the teacher.
Just then, the testing instructor called out, “Next, the students from Class Seven…”
At that moment, a clear male voice rang out across the venue.
“Please wait!”
Tang Ruotong and Lu Shiyu were startled, their bodies trembling with excitement as they turned to look.
A handsome young man, wearing a humble smile at the corner of his lips, was striding quickly toward the testing area.
“It’s Wang Chen!”
“He actually made it! Chen’s timing is insane!”
“This must be the fearless confidence of a top scholar.”
The arrival of Wang Chen instantly stirred a commotion among the students from No.1 High School.
Of course, alongside those happy to see him come, there were also those booing him.
“That Wang Chen is so arrogant, only showing up at the critical moment, huh?”
“Exactly! Who does he think he is? The protagonist of some perfect story?”
“So what if he’s here? His level test results aren’t guaranteed. After all, he’s just a Life Shaman.”
“...”
Some resented Wang Chen’s long-standing dominance as the top student in Luzhou No.1, while others disliked his triumphant demeanor.
And then there was Cai Kun, who held a personal grudge against Wang Chen.
Originally laughing and joking with his followers, Cai Kun’s face turned incredulous upon seeing Wang Chen arrive.
“Wang Chen actually came! How? Did he manage to evade the thugs? But if that’s true, then why was he late?”
Countless speculations flashed through Cai Kun’s mind.
Though confused, he sensed that something had changed.
Wang Chen passed by him, casting a slight glance in his direction.
That single look struck a tremendous threat into Cai Kun’s heart.
It was cold and carried a certain menace, as if Wang Chen was making a declaration.
Cai Kun panicked inside. “What does he mean by that? Is he seeking revenge?”
“No way, this is the university competition! Would he risk being punished for unfair play?”
“But that look… it’s clearly one meant to finish me off!”
Cai Kun was utterly thrown off balance. His followers, noticing sweat on his brow, assumed it was the heat and busied themselves fanning him solicitously.
Yet no one knew that Cai Kun was not feeling hot but cold; the sweat was all cold sweat.
...
Wang Chen approached the testing area, passing Tang Ruotong and Lu Shiyu. He greeted Tang Ruotong with a smile but only gave Lu Shiyu a nod that carried a strong sense of distance.
Then he came before the crystal ball.
The testing instructor grumbled, “Wang Chen, huh? You’re way too late. If you missed it, you’d regret it for life.”
“This kid, really, doesn’t seem to worry about his own future at all.”
His tone was filled with the concern of a teacher for a student.
Wang Chen smiled, “Sorry, I ran into some unexpected events and delayed everyone’s time.”
“No worries, you’re here now. Quickly place your palm on the crystal ball,” the instructor said.
Wang Chen complied.
He placed his clearly jointed, pale, and strong palm on the crystal ball.
Immediately, a radiant glow bloomed from the crystal ball.
The light was so intense that Wang Chen felt a slight warmth in his palm.
Then came a faint trembling sensation.
“Hm? Does the crystal ball usually tremble during testing?” Wang Chen wondered.
“Wang Chen, profession Life Shaman, level… huh? Why hasn’t the level data come out yet? Is it malfunctioning?” the instructor looked baffled, leaving his seat to verify the crystal ball repeatedly.
The anomaly at the testing site drew everyone’s attention.
...
On the elevated platform.
“Is this Wang Chen the same student who was late at No.1 High School before?” the organizer asked his secretary.
Upon receiving a confirmation, Zhu Jingjun snorted coldly.
“So it’s this brat, so disrespectful, no wonder he awakened as a Life Shaman.”
Ou Yulan smiled, “The boy looks quite spirited.”
Yu Jiazheng kindly said, “This young man always brings surprises. First he was late, and now the crystal ball seems to be malfunctioning.”
“Could this be a sign of a special individual? Interesting, very interesting.”
Seeing the crystal ball’s abnormality with Wang Chen, the organizer felt uneasy and hurriedly ordered the secretary to prepare a replacement.
...
Back at the testing area, the trembling of the crystal ball in Wang Chen’s hand intensified, prompting him to ask aloud.
“Teacher, the crystal ball is trembling—is this normal?”
The instructor was taken aback. “Never heard of this before. Could it be a malfunction?”
He bent down to observe the crystal ball carefully. “It still glows normally, looks fine. In fact, the glow seems even brighter in your hands.”
Suddenly, a loud “pop” sounded from Wang Chen’s hand; the crystal ball shattered into pieces.
A shard exploded outward!
The instructor, observing closely, was dangerously close—one shard flew straight toward his eye!
“Teacher, watch out!” Wang Chen immediately placed his palm between the shard and the instructor.
“Pfft!”
In the blink of an eye, the shard pierced Wang Chen’s palm, embedding deeply. A thin stream of blood began to flow, growing steadily.
“Ah! Student, are you alright?” The instructor’s face was anxious as he moved to tend to Wang Chen’s wound.
