Chapter Sixty-Eight: A New Mission
The director practically shouted. Almost everyone on set was startled.
“What happened?”
“What did the director just say?”
“My god! Putting Hao Mingxing together with a second-tier singer?”
“The director’s gone mad!”
The scene became chaotic.
But the director didn’t bother with much explanation. After giving his instructions, he immediately went to another area, seeking out another person in the production team. “Old Chen, is the news true?”
Old Chen nodded. “Just now, Hao Mingxing resubmitted his song list for the show. We’ve confirmed that, to help Hao Mingxing participate, Wordless has written two new songs for him, including ‘Doesn’t Matter.’ Essentially, Hao Mingxing will be singing three of Wordless’s songs on our program.”
“It’s… absurd!”
The director stood there in a daze for a moment before finally uttering those words.
Old Chen spoke seriously, “This is a huge potential highlight for the show. We need to make the most of it.”
The director replied without hesitation, “Of course. If we don’t capitalize on this kind of headline, we’d be fools.”
Wordless had shaken the music industry with just three songs, even altering the balance between singers and composers to some extent.
And now, he was writing two new songs specifically for Hao Mingxing, a contestant on ‘Singer’s Style.’
What does this signify?
The answer was obvious.
Old Chen frowned. “The key issue is we don’t know the quality of the songs Wordless wrote for Hao Mingxing.”
The director laughed heartily. “Old Chen, you’re still not seeing the bigger picture. What does the quality of Wordless’s songs have to do with hype?”
If the songs are good, the publicity will be seamless.
If the songs are bad, we’ll have even more reason to stir things up.
So, whether the songs are good or bad, it’s good for our show!”
Old Chen considered this and agreed wholeheartedly.
The director continued, “Of course, the pre-show publicity and focus can center on Hao Mingxing, but don’t ever think Hao Mingxing truly has the strength to rival first or second-tier singers. Hype is hype, but the core of the show must revolve around the main singers. After all, our program’s mainstream is the first and second-tier singers. We can’t lose sight of the big picture for the sake of small gains.”
Old Chen nodded. “I understand.”
...
Wang Mo never expected the production team of ‘Singer’s Style’ would use him for publicity.
But if he knew, he’d probably welcome it.
The more they hype, the more fame “Wordless” gains.
Speaking of which, it’s been a while since he last looked at his system panel.
What has his reputation become?
He silently thought, “System, display the panel.”
[Name: Wang Mo]
[Age: 22]
[Height: 180m (Host’s strong request; actual height 179cm)]
[Appearance: 90]
[Reputation: -24,859,213]
[Items: None]
[Draw: None]
[Store: Not yet open]
[Side Quest: Within one month, raise your livestream account’s followers to over one million. (Only five days left)]
Wang Mo rolled his eyes. “System, please explain, what do you mean I strongly requested my height to be 180? That’s just the truth, isn’t it?”
He’d just measured it yesterday. In the morning, he was a solid 181cm tall!
Of course, he shrinks a bit at night.
The system gave no response.
Wang Mo didn’t bother arguing with the system. He glanced at his reputation, which had indeed become negative twenty-four million plus.
One more step towards turning his reputation positive.
But the side quest—only five days left.
He hurriedly asked, “System, what happens if I don’t complete the side quest? Is there a punishment?”
Would it be an electric shock?
Or bondage?
System: “There will be no punishment, but similar side quests will not be issued again.”
That’s a relief.
Wang Mo exhaled, though he felt a faint sense of loss.
After a moment, he looked at the final side quest, pondering: How can he use the last five days to complete it?
After all, the reward this time was: Special Treasure Chest*1.
It was his first chance to get a special chest—too precious to miss.
Just as his thoughts began to stir, the system’s voice sounded again:
[New mission issued]
[Mission content: Assist Hao Mingxing in ‘Singer’s Style’ to break into the top three overall rankings, and ensure he secures at least one brand endorsement worth ten million after winning the spot.]
[Mission reward: Silver Treasure Chest*1, Bronze Treasure Chest*2]
Wang Mo exclaimed softly.
This was a reward delivered straight to his door.
He had already decided to help Hao Mingxing secure a great ranking on ‘Singer’s Style,’ and now the system had issued such a mission.
However.
He was puzzled by the latter part: Get Hao Mingxing an endorsement deal? What kind of task was that? What did it have to do with Wang Mo?
He didn’t understand.
...
At the same time.
Hao Mingxing opened his email, seeing the third song Wang Mo had sent him: “He Must Love You Very Much.”
Beside him, his agent Zheng Lai smiled. “Wang—Wordless really favors you, Mingxing. I’ve heard plenty of famous singers have approached him for songs, with the highest offers reaching several million, even ten million. But Wordless never responded. Yet he’s written three songs just for you. If this gets out, it’ll surely spark a media storm.”
Hao Mingxing fell silent, then suddenly asked, “Zheng, how much is left in the bank card I gave you?”
Zheng Lai replied quickly, “Very little remains. Every month, when your salary and share arrive, I immediately use the ‘Wang Yan’ identity to build Hope Primary Schools in the mountain regions. I’ve even formed a dedicated team to handle it. We’ve already reached agreements with several local governments to build five Hope Primary Schools, all named ‘Wang Yan Hope Primary School.’ The first school has already begun construction, and everything is progressing smoothly.”
“Have any reporters taken interest?”
“Local reporters have covered it somewhat, but none have discovered who ‘Wang Yan’ really is, so the story fizzled out. Online, there’s not even a ripple.”
“Good, let’s keep it that way.”
Hao Mingxing nodded. “Brother Mo gave me fame, so I can only repay him with benefit. One shouldn’t be too greedy, taking both fame and profit. Since Brother Mo doesn’t want profit, I’ll convert it to fame and return it to him. Do you think I’m doing the right thing?”
Zheng Lai replied, “Absolutely.”
Hao Mingxing’s eyes sparkled. “If only I earned more money. When I do, I’ll build one hundred, even one thousand Hope Primary Schools for Brother Mo. Let’s see which critic still dares to badmouth him.”
...
Wang Mo knew nothing of Hao Mingxing’s actions.
He rarely contacted Hao Mingxing, nor did he reach out to Su Xueyao or Fu Zhuang.
It was Su Xueyao who called him almost daily, rain or shine. Breakfast coffee was still meticulously arranged for him.
This was why the company joked that Hao Mingxing and Su Xueyao were Wang Mo’s loyal fans.
Of course, everyone grumbled in private, but envied him openly.
Such loyal fans—they’d welcome them too.
Even better!
That evening.
Wang Mo left work early and headed straight to another location.
Tonight.
He would livestream!
And according to Yuan Xiong’s suggestion, he’d spice up the broadcast to make it more exciting and appealing.
